Before you start
Fix the duration before you start comparing anything. A five-second run and a thirty-second run measure different things: the short one measures burst speed, the long one measures sustained rate, and almost everyone scores noticeably higher on the short one. Comparing across durations is the most common way people fool themselves.
Decide which input you are training. Left button, right button and spacebar all have separate tools and separate personal bests, because the muscles and the switch travel are different in each case.
Be honest about why. Raising a CPS score is a fine personal challenge, but sustained rapid clicking causes real strain, and no score is worth a repetitive strain injury. Stop when your hand or forearm aches.
Run the check
Run a ten-second baseline with ordinary clicking before trying any technique, and save it. Without a baseline you cannot tell whether a technique helped or whether you simply warmed up.
The most common techniques are jitter clicking, which uses forearm tension to vibrate the finger; butterfly clicking, which alternates two fingers on the same button; and drag clicking, which drags a finger across the button surface so friction produces multiple actuations. Each raises the raw number substantially and each has a cost.
After each attempt, read the consistency figure rather than just the total. The tool groups events into 250 ms buckets and compares them by standard deviation, so a technique that produces a great peak and long empty gaps shows up as inconsistent even when the total looks good.
Check the peak one-second window alongside the average. A high peak with a low average means you cannot sustain the technique, which matters if the goal is anything other than a screenshot.
Read your result
Ordinary clicking usually lands between 5 and 8 CPS. Jitter clicking commonly reaches 10 to 14 with practice. Butterfly clicking can exceed that, and drag clicking produces the highest raw numbers of all — which is exactly why most competitive servers ban the latter two.
A mouse contributes less than people expect. Switch travel and actuation force matter a little, and light switches make butterfly clicking easier, but no mouse turns 6 CPS into 12. Marketing that suggests otherwise is selling the technique, not the hardware.
Drag clicking is the exception, because it depends entirely on the mouse: it needs a specific button surface texture and switch behaviour, and it accelerates switch wear dramatically. A mouse used for drag clicking will develop the double-click fault far sooner than one used normally.
Measurement limits
A CPS score measures the event stream this page received, not switch quality or hand health. No debounce is applied, which is deliberate: filtering rapid events would hide both genuine speed and genuine switch bounce.
That also means a mouse with a failing switch can post an inflated score, because duplicate events count. If a score jumps without a technique change, run the double click test before celebrating.
Browser scheduling can shift bucket boundaries by a few milliseconds, so the total and the elapsed performance clock are the primary values and the per-bucket distribution is secondary.
What to do next
If the goal is a personal best, pick one technique, one duration and one input, and compare only within that set. Progress becomes visible within a few sessions.
If the goal is competitive play, check the rules first. Butterfly and drag clicking are banned on many servers and detectable through exactly the pattern signatures this tool displays.
If your score suddenly rises without a change in technique, treat that as a possible hardware symptom rather than a win, and run a double-click check. An inflated CPS is one of the earliest signs of a worn switch.
